We are in the Amana Colonies for the next week or so and it turns out that this weekend is Oktoberfest, so it's pretty crowded. We spent some time wandering around Amana and then drove through East Amana and Middle Amana before heading back for some dinner---bratwurst and German potato salad purchased at Amana Meats and Smokehouse. We came out of the RV to find that three hot-air balloons were drifting over the area and
then they drifted back over this way and landed in the cornfield next to the RV park. Really neat to see them so up-close.
The Amana Colonies number seven, and the communal buildings are made of clapboard siding and this large-stone construction. After the Colonies voted (1932) to not live communally, members were allowed to purchase their own homes and now there is a wide variety of house styles, all with meticulously-kept yards and landscaping and lots and lots of cornfields.
This large walnut rocker will really hold people and is billed as "Iowa's largest walnut rocker" but I'm not sure where another similar one would be.
